Motif # 3

Here is my third motif for the 25 Motif Challenge. I am not sure how many people have made Jane's Gecko, which is available on her pattern site, but I just had to make one more.

This particular Gecko will be (at least I plan to) attached to a t-shirt for myself. There are not a lot of tatting patterns that I think I would wear, but this Gecko is one of them. For this motif, I used some of Yarnplayer's hand dyed thread. The colour is "Deep Ocean" in a size 30. I really wish I had bought more of this colour in this size.

I am also following along with Jane's Tat It And See. Here are the first two parts completed.

And finally, Connie mentioned that she would love to see some of my plants, so I will try to add a picture of one every once in a while. Here is a picture of one of my Phalaenopsis orchids. This one is called 'Salu Princess'. It has been flowering for more than a month.

  1. Oh WoW Jeff! I love your gecko! The colors are awesome! Just beautiful!!!
Thank you for posting one of your orchids! So pretty!!!
One of these days, I just may have to try growing one! Thanks again!

  2. Thanks for the compliments Connie, glad you like the colours (so do I). The Phalaenopsis orchids are quite easy to grow. If you can grow African violets, you can probably grow these orchids.

  3. LOL I can't seem to grow violets so I would probably kill it. But then again I used to kill every aloe vera plant I would try growing, and I now have one growing like crazy that was so close to death when I got it, I never figured it would live.

  4. Actually, I have killed almost every cactus/succulent that I have owned. I can't seem to grow them at all. I do have an aloe vera plant, but it's not growing like crazy.

  5. You inspire me now to give them a try if I can find any that aren't too expensive.
    Thanks Jeff!

  7. You did a great job on the gecko. I got addicted to them and there are three (I think) on my animal shirt that I wear for my grandson. Thanks for showing the orchid. I had almost given up on my Phals ever blomming. Now, I have two bloom stalks on orchids that I have had for 3 and 5 years - finally! My Jewel orchid has SEVEN stalks about to burst open. I will post pictures.

  8. Thanks for the comments Laura. i have made three of them as well, but I don't think I want all of them on a shirt. As easy as Phals are to grow, I think they can be stubborn to flower. Last year, I had two flower. This year only one. I bought a new one this spring and have a small one that I am still waiting on. I've almost given up on my jewel orchid. I don't think it like the soil it is in.

  9. You are welcome Jeff. I made lots of Jane Eborall's animals for Isaac's room. Then, when I saw Jane put her geckos on a shirt I decided to put all of the animals on a shirt. Isaac loves it! I can't remember what the name of the orchid mix is that I have my jewel orchid in. I have it in soil for terrestrial orchids and in a wide, shallow container and feed it like I do my others. Good luck.

  10. Thanks for the info Laura. I'll have to see what i can find. I couldn't find out what kind of mix to use for terrestrial orchids, so I made my own. That is probably why i am having difficulties with it. Thanks again.

  11. I'm far from an expert, but between Clyde and I we do okay. I would be glad to give you my email address if you want it. I always enjoy talking about orchids and tatting!
