Digital Tatting: Oval Windmills Doily

Me again. Thanks everyone for your kind comments about the doily. And don't worry, it will be given to my mom as a gift as intended. I've never had this problem with any other tatting before. It's probably due to how long it's taken me to make it. Anyway, Miranda mentioned that making the doily into an oval shape may ruin the effect of the pattern. Well, I isolated two motifs (one on each side) from the doily (it wasn't easy; I kept going cross-eyed!) and duplicated them. The individual motifs were skewed and resized into the proper alignment. It's not perfect, but it shows the effect quite well.

Well, what do you think? Please be honest. Personally, I still like it. However, if looks odd to everyone else, I'll reconsider. I don't want to make it larger by adding another full round. I still have to add a final round of chains to finish it off as well.

That's if for now. I haven't done any tatting since I finished the doily, but I still hope to tonight yet. Tomorrow will be another cheese making day. I plan on making some Colby cheese. I'm also working on a chainmaille project, but it has become a major PITA. Till next time.

  1. It does look better than what I had visualized... just goes to show that sometimes you have to see it for real. I still think it looked better before, though. To me, it's just a design that looks best if all sides are the same size. I don't think an outer chain is necessary, either-- like I said, know when to stop. It's your doily, though, and you know your mom's taste.

  2. Thanks again Miranda. I still don't agree with you about the shape, but that's OK. I may be alone in liking it. You are right about the outer round. Mary mentions to make an outer round as part of the pattern. It joins to all the picots and makes a cleaner edge. If you like the picots on the sides (I don't) you probably don't need that round. It would also make the doily much easier to block.

  3. I think it is lovely and it works really well! How are you going with your spinning? I recieved my unwashed mohair wool today and spent most of the day washing it. On reflection I should have ordered roving yarn ready to spin!

  5. I like it! I think I like it better than the round one. Oddly enough, every time I see this one, I think it's knitted. That's how powerful the design effect is.

  6. This is superb tatting.

Since you asked for an opinion: I do like it rounder as in the last picture.

It's all so subjective, isn't it, Jeff? Either way, I am sure your mom will treasure this.

I still have the orange blob of clay my 37 year old 'baby' boy made for me in kindergarten! And I still think it is beautiful!

  7. I like them both! It might be a matter of where it will fit for your mom and, therefore, what shape would work best for her to have a good place to display it.

  8. I'm going to second what Marty said - depends on what your mom will do with it. You mentioned in your last post about it that it's already quite large as it is... I like it either way, though.

My preference would be to leave the outer chain off, but that's just me. ;-)

  9. I think it's ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!! It's not the lacey look that the average person might look for in tatting, but the geometry is AMAZING!! Not everyone likes that look! I also do stained glass and do my designs in autocad where I can get that flow, like this has, that sometimes takes a certain eye to "get" what you're doing!! Lots of engineers have like my work!! But PLEASE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! ;-)

  10. It's gorgeous. I don't mine the asymmetry at all,and I'm a clean edge gal so I'd go with the pattern and do the chain thing. Well I think I would. I don't know much abut tatting. I do crochet and my fingers don't seem to want to change gears for the tatting bobbin.

I am also wondering how things are going with the spinning. :)

  11. the doily is beautiful!! i LOVE the shape of it, and agree that the effect is very evident in the piece as it is now. i happen to think that the way you have it now, is more interesting than an oval would be. but that's just my opinion, i like things that have a little twist to them, not always traditional or following the rules (ie: oval doily)
