New Bookmark Design

Well, I finished tatting my bookmark last night. I haven't worked on anything else, so this will a short post. So without any further delay, I present, The Sine Wave Bookmark!

It's nothing special, but I like it. Kinda. I still don't like how I made the top and bottom of the bookmark. I tried two different ways to do these. I prefer the clover on the left, but it needs some work. I used Lizbeth size 40 in colour #656 Dark Wedgewood. Now, and I may regret this, but I want your honest opinions of my bookmark. I also want to know if anyone has seen anything like this. I know I haven't seen anything like this, but maybe someone else has. Oh, and if you are wondering where the name of the bookmark comes from, it's because while I was tatting the sides of the bookmark, they reminded me of a Sine Wave.

That's it for now. I will be remaking the bookmark again, so I can perfect the ends. I also want to finish my crochet project, since it's almost done. We'll see if the weather cooperates. I tend not to crochet when it's really hot out. It's been rainy and cool here for the past few days. Till next time.

  1. I don't believe I've seen anything like it, either. The clover looks the best to me, but I wonder if there's a way to continue the "wave" around the end?

  2. Thanks Marty. I will take your suggestion and see what I can come up with. I like the idea of continuing the wave around the ends.

  3. At first glance, I preferred the clover end as well; but then I looked at the bookmark, and I decided that if it were to be my choice, I think I would thread a masculine bit of grosgrain ribbon through it, to make it more solid - and then the wave end would look perfect! I actually think that this is a wonderful pattern for a man, are you going to publish it one day?

  4. Ooh, the simple lines always grab me and I love the lines of your since wave.

I have not seen anything like this.

The clover looks good, but I wonder...if you split ring for R1 of your clover, then a chain for your sine wave, then another split ring for R3 of your clover?

You'd have to try it to see if you liked it.

Again, I love the clean lines of this bookmark!

  5. Aren't figuring out the ends a real bugaboo? I like the clean lines of it too and also the feel of masculine. As Maureen said, a ribbon can be put down the center and the type of ribbon could lean it feminine or masculine too. I like the clover end better, BUT, if you were to put a tassle on the end, it would work better on the plain end so you could do both. Good design job! (and in tatting!)

  6. Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm relieved that you all like it.

That's a good idea Maureen, thanks. I'll look into it. Yes, I do plan on sharing the pattern, if it appears to be different enough.

Thanks Isdihara. I'll give that a try if my current idea doesn't work.

Thanks Gina. The ends are a real pain. I'll look into the tassel idea as well.

  7. Hi, Jeff,

Looks like an original to me! Very nice. Love the simplicity.

What would it look like with larger heavier clovers, sloping into the sides of the wave - sort of anchoring them... Just a thought. I like the clovers much better, obviously, and I think a tassel would be nicer than a ribbon, myself. : )

  8. Jeff, you have a fantastic design here that I look forward to tatting. I find brainstorming pattern ideas to be loads of fun and I hope you do, too. So let me toss out another thought about the design as is. If you shorten the split ring chain so that it curves the wave like the clover does on the other end, you might like it better.

  9. I think Eliz has a good suggestion. Okay, I think all of the suggestions have merit and could work. I haven't seen any patterns like this, either. I would like to make it! Great job! Looking forward to what you decide to do.

  10. Thanks Fox, Eliz, and tattrldy.

You know Fox, my initial diagram had large clovers on the ends, but I obviously didn't tat large clovers. I'm not sure why. I'm not sure about the ribbon either, but I'll still try it. I like the tassel idea too.

Thanks Eliz, I'll consider that option as well.

Hopefully I'll have a pattern soon tattrldy, so anyone can try it.

I've got so many ideas, I think I'll end up with a half a dozen or so bookmarks when I'm done. Thanks again everyone.

  11. I've never seen anything like it either, and I think you've come up with the perfect name for it, too.

I prefer the clover end; I think it makes it look more "finished". I don't care for the way it sort of pinches the sides together, though. Making the clover bigger, as Fox suggests, with longer chains, would fix that.

I like IsDihara's suggestion a lot, too. I'm assuming she means to leave out the middle ring of the clover altogether, replacing it with the "wave" chain. That would probably be the simplest way of keeping the wave going.

Also, I would not put any decorative picots on the inside. Those two that you have at the split ring end are a bit distracting to me, since there aren't any elsewhere in the bookmark. The decorative picots on the outside are nice, though.

Overall, I like the design. It's very well balanced, and I like the shape of the negative spaces.

  12. I havent seen a design like this before so congrats on your design.
I like it a lot and you have a few good suggestions so I wont add to them, although I like the treefoil at the left more that the other end I would like to se a tassel at that end
