I started working on the third (and final) round of the Lucky Clover doily (a Blomquist and Persson pattern). For this round, I am using Accent thread in colour 04, Mediterranean Blues. Except for the slightly lighter blue, I don't know where the name comes from. It has purple and what appears to be black along with the blue in the colourway. It looks alright to me, but I want your opinion. Here is the doily with 1/4 of the third round complete:
Please, give me your honest opinions. Love it, let me know. Don't like how the variegated thread looks, let me know as well. I can remove what I have done so far if you all think it doesn't look right. I know this pattern looks great when done completely with variegated thread. I would like to remake the doily in King Tut thread later on. Not for a while probably as I have waaaaaaaaay too many other things I want to make first. So, to recap, post your honest opinions about how the doily looks with the variegated thread. You, my fellow tatters, can make a difference. You can choose the fate of the final round. I will wait for a day or two to give time for you to get your opinions posted.
BTW, has anyone else noticed that the negative space between rounds one and two look kinda like the head of a teddy bear? Maybe it's just me. Bye for now.
I would prefer to see the purple in a much lighter shade rather than dark as in the picture. Maybe it is just the colour resolution of the photo. Whatever it is, the doily is looking beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I can see teddy's head in the negative space too.
Love it! When I first opened your blog, the black was the first thing to pop out at me. It is very striking.
ReplyDeleteI love the variegated! I think it draws the eye to the design. I didn't notice the teddies before, but I do now! I vote for using the variegated!
ReplyDeleteKing Tut... ooh! I've played with it, but I haven't completed anything. Another thing to add to my list!
I think it looks great with the variegated for the final round. The black makes the colors pop. I have used Perfect Quilter thread and it's lovely!

I like the effect from the variegated. Keep it.

Unanimous so far. I love it too! I agree that the negative space looks like a teddy bear too. I had not noticed it before.
ReplyDeleteNice job so far! I have done this doily before and used a varigated thread throughout. I used a subtle light maroon to dark maroon thread, not highly contrasty. I am thinking that the varigated you are using on the outside row detracts from the beauty of the design as a whole. It doesn't hurt the negative space which is the main characteristic of this piece. Sometimes simple is better in order for a design to work and trying to work out something in contrast tones just to be different may not necessarily be the best choice for the piece. Altho I do like the thread choice.
ReplyDeleteI know.....I can be boring sometimes with my choice of threads when the rest of the tatting world loves color all over the place. But you have to consider how you want the finished product to be and it needs to be complimentary instead of fighting the design.
This is just MHO!!
I'm afraid I tend to agree with Mark. The darkness in the variagated does detract a little bit from the rest BUT I think once the whole of this round is completed with that thread it will actually look tremendous. Sorry, I'm a ditherer but at the end of the day I say - stick with what you're doing and do another in all blue then we can judge!!!!
ReplyDeleteJane - ducking under the keyboard!!
PS thanks for answering the mystery of where I made that doily from!! Wonder where mine is now?
When you said you were doing the outer round in a matching variegated blue, I envisioned a blue going from the gorgeous blue of the centre and fading through shades of blue/green to white which I could totally see as froth on the crest of Mediteranean waves. The blue to dark purple was a bit of a shock. I'm not sure I like it, but then I'm not sure I DIS-like it either. I don't love it, but I could live with it and it might grow on me. I think I was expecting a variegate that went lighter, not darker. I would have loved it all in the same rich blue, but it's my favourite colour to start with. It will be pretty if you continue with the variegated thread, I'm just not sure if the monochromatic would have looked better or not. Then again, it depends on where you display it. In a spot where the purples pick up other colours in the room it might look spectacular.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a pity using the dark (black) on the outer round. Just my opinion and no big explanation, I just like it better without the dark.
ReplyDeleteBesides that you have done a great job with this.
I like it. I looked at the picture in large mode and it appears to me that the color of the center is faithfully repeated in the variegate, which will help tie it together. I can see the point others have made about how dark the variegate gets, yet, it works for me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all you're opinions. Keep 'em coming. I think I am more unsure of what I should do than ever. I guess I'll give it a few more days to decide. Sorry for the confusion Sharon. I think the name of the variegate is misleading.
ReplyDeleteI think it would look more elegant in the plain thread, it's a very striking design.
ReplyDeleteAfter looking at it closely and seeing that the variegated thread matches the other thread in places. I say go for it and finish the doily in the variegated thread. I think you will be very pleased with it when it is done as the colours will pop out at you and grab your attention.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the negative space does look like something. I think it looks like bunnies...LOL!
ReplyDeleteI guess the negative space could looks like bunnies Chiclet, if you want.
ReplyDeleteHi Jeff,
ReplyDeleteI have made this doily myself all in a varigated green thread. It was Lemon Tree or something like that for the color and it was Valdani thread. I just thought clovers and green goes together. I do like the way mine turned out. The darker color does get your notice, but the design of this doily is so pretty I think. As far as the negative space goes which I didn't even think about when I made this same design reminds me of a cat's head.
